![]() ![]() One is the decision to place extra mana crystals toward the center of each arena. There are some extremely smart design choices on display here that I would like to call attention to. Just like most card games every unit or spell costs a certain amount of energy which increases every turn. When the battle begins, these units will be randomly shuffled onto the action bar which acts as your virtual hand of cards. Where Duelyst differs from other tactics games is with the addition of a deckbuilding mechanic.īefore a match begins you construct a force of units, spells, and artifacts with a large variety of abilities. Through the use of strategy and positioning your goal is to reduce the enemy general’s health to zero. You command a general that can summon additional units onto a grid-based board. The core gameplay of Duelyst is that of a tactics game. I’m happy to say that Duelyst II is easily one of the most unique titles I’ve played and certainly deserves to be revisited. Now that I have a functioning PC of my own I was excited to hear the game would be returning and couldn’t wait to finally try it out for myself. I never played the original Duelyst but I remembered hearing many positive things from internet content creators of the time. Now under the banner of Dream Sloth Games, Duelyst II seeks to reinvigorate the card game landscape once again. This past year the game was completely remade by fans and a few of the original developers. I'm curious to hear what the residential Hearthstone players make of this? How does it compare? Is it any good? Is it for casual plebs? Validate my enjoyment please. This wasn’t the end for Duelyst though. By the time you've had a few practice matches against the AI you're ready to go up against your first human opponent and take your first steps to world domination (add me to get rekt breh)! So give this a try! It's free, looks gorgeous (seriously, how could you say no to those sprites?) and while I'd be the first to admit that a strategy game involving cards/deck building can feel a bit overwhelming, the short tutorial does a good job of establishing the basics and letting you then progress naturally. You get the idea. Basically if you mix The Banner Saga with Hearthstone you'd end up with Duelyst. I think? Turns go by fast and while there's obviously some RNG involved the tutorial and matches against the AI haven't felt unfair (so far). Obviously I've not even scratched the surface here but have already won my first online game just now, hurray! Now I'm not much of a card game connoisseur (I've only played Hearthstone for a couple of hours) but I do like strategy and this seems to offer it in spades! You choose a faction, place your cards on a grid where units can then move around freely, you outsmart your enemy for a bit and after a match you get currency to unlock new cards which then allow you to build a better deck and so on and so forth. While it is still technically in open-beta the game will 'release' to version 1.0 on April 27.
